The white-fronted knifefish is a fascinating sight in the aquarium. With its deep black coloration and striking white forehead markings, Apteronotus albifrons moves through the water gliding and almost floating. Using a weak electric field, this species can orient itself even in complete darkness, making it a particularly interesting fish to keep.

This species is primarily crepuscular and nocturnal and requires numerous hiding places such as tubes, caves, and driftwood. The white-fronted knifefish is territorial towards other members of its species, which is why it is best kept singly or only in very large aquariums. Peaceful, sufficiently large tank mates are possible, provided there is enough space.
