The vampire otocinclus is an extremely rare and unusual representative of the small armored catfish. With its distinctive head shape, angular body form, and slightly "fierce" expression, Nannoptopoma sternoptychum clearly stands out from classic otocinclus species. Despite its name, it is a peaceful and beneficial aquarium inhabitant.
This species lives near the bottom and prefers well-structured aquariums with wood, areas for algae growth, and calm zones. The vampire otocinclus is more sensitive than many other algae eaters and requires stable water parameters as well as an established aquarium with sufficient natural biofilm. It thrives best when kept in small groups.
