The tiger shrimp ( Caridina cantonensis ) is an impressive dwarf shrimp that stands out with its striking stripes and colors. It is particularly popular with aquarists who are looking for an unusual and yet relatively easy-care shrimp species. Its namesake stripes, which are reminiscent of the pattern of a tiger, make it a decorative element in any aquarium.
Characteristics:
- Size : The tiger shrimp grows to about 2.5 to 3 cm in size. Females are usually a bit stronger and larger than males.
- Coloration : This shrimp species is known for its transparent to bluish bodies with dark, black or brown horizontal stripes. There are various breeding forms, including variants with more intense blue or orange bodies.
- Behavior : Tiger shrimp are peaceful and like to live in groups. They are curious and spend a lot of time searching the substrate and plants for food. They get along well with other peaceful shrimp species and small, non-predatory fish.
Attitude:
- Aquarium size : An aquarium of 20 liters or more is ideal for a group of these shrimp. Dense vegetation, stones and roots provide hiding places and create a natural environment.
- Water values : Tiger shrimp prefer soft to medium hard water with a pH value between 6.0 and 7.5. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 24 °C. Stability in water values is particularly important to avoid stress and disease.
- Food : They feed on algae, biofilm and organic remains in the aquarium. To supplement them, they can be fed with special shrimp food, spirulina, vegetables such as spinach or protein-rich food such as Artemia.
- Reproduction : Breeding tiger shrimp is no problem if the water quality is stable. Females carry the eggs for about 3 to 4 weeks before the young shrimp hatch. The young require good water quality and sufficient food to develop healthily.
Special features:
The tiger shrimp is a robust and versatile dwarf shrimp that is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Its characteristic stripes and color variations make it a real eye-catcher in the aquarium. With the right care and stable water conditions, it is easy to keep and breed well.
