The Southeast Asian moss Taxiphyllum barbieri is robust and not very sensitive. It is often referred to as Java moss, although the original Java moss belongs to the species Vesicularia dubyana . In fact, Taxiphyllum barbieri replaced this species in the 1970s. V. dubyana is occasionally imported again today, often under the name Java moss or Singapore moss. Taxiphyllum barbieri can also be cultivated well in shady areas of the aquarium and does not have high requirements in terms of water values or temperature.
Tufts of Java moss, which are fixed to small stones in the foreground, give the aquarium a special flair. It also has a particularly beautiful effect when tied to roots and larger stones. Over time, the moss grows firmly on its own.
Regular, vigorous pruning promotes dense and bushy growth of Taxiphyllum barbieri. The cushions can be easily propagated by division, and cut shoots can simply be tied back on or attached with cyanoacrylate-based superglue.
