The sailfin catfish ( Leiarius pictus ) is a majestic large catfish from the Amazon basin and is considered one of the most beautiful members of its family. Its tall, sail-like dorsal fin and the contrasting pattern of dark spots and lines are particularly striking. This impressive species is peaceful, robust, and very popular with aquarists who keep large tanks.

In the wild , Learius pictus inhabits calm, deeper sections of large river systems in South America. There, it lives primarily on the bottom, often near roots or in the shade of large stones. Juveniles exhibit a more intense pattern, which, with age, transforms into an elegant spotted pattern.

🌿 Characteristics & Attitude:
🐟 Fish size: XL (approx. 20–30 cm, juvenile)
🌍 Origin: South America (Amazon, Orinoco, Essequibo system) – Wild caught
🌡️ Temperature: 25-30°C
💧 pH value: 6.0–7.5
⚖️ Total hardness: up to 20 °dGH
🐠 Social behavior: Peaceful, growing large, active
🏞️ Aquarium: from 1500 l (long-term >8000 l) with roots, current & free swimming space

🍽️ Feeding:
The sailfin catfish is an omnivore with a preference for protein-rich food. Frozen and live foods such as mussel meat, shrimp, krill, and pieces of fish are readily accepted. Juveniles will also eat sinking pellets and granules. A varied diet promotes vitality and growth.

💡 Tip:
Learius pictus should be kept in very large, well-filtered aquariums with a strong current. Due to its size and activity level, it is only suitable for experienced aquarists. It can be kept with robust, larger fish.

👉 Conclusion:
The sailfin catfish ( Leiarius pictus ) is an imposing, peaceful large catfish with an impressive dorsal fin – a highlight for any large South American aquarium.
