The Red Bee Shrimp ( Caridina logemanni ) is one of the best known and most sought-after dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Its striking red and white pattern makes it a real eye-catcher in any aquarium. This shrimp species originally comes from selective breeding of the bee shrimp and is particularly valued for its various color variations and breeding forms.
Characteristics:
- Size : The Red Bee shrimp grows to about 2.5 to 3 cm in size. Females are usually larger and plumper than males.
- Coloration : The typical appearance of the Red Bee shrimp consists of a red base color with snow-white bands or spots. This high-contrast pattern can vary greatly depending on the breeding type and quality. There are several breeding grades in which shrimp with particularly intense colors and clear demarcations are valued higher.
- Behavior : Red Bee shrimp are peaceful and sociable. They like to live in groups and spend a lot of time searching the bottom for food. They can be kept well with other shrimp species and small, peaceful fish.
Attitude:
- Aquarium size : A tank of at least 20 to 30 liters is ideal for a small group of Red Bee shrimp. It should be densely planted and offer plenty of hiding places with moss, roots and stones to give the shrimp somewhere to retreat.
- Water values : Red Bee shrimp are more sensitive than other shrimp species and prefer soft, slightly acidic water with a pH value of 5.5 to 6.5 and temperatures between 20 and 24 °C. Stable water values are particularly important for their well-being and successful maintenance.
- Food : They feed on algae, biofilm, detritus and special shrimp food. A varied diet supports their health and coloration.
- Reproduction : Red Bee shrimps reproduce relatively well in freshwater aquariums. After mating, the females carry their eggs under their abdomen for about 30 days until the fully developed young shrimps hatch. They are tiny, but already independent.
Special features:
The Red Bee shrimp is often kept in special breeding projects due to its high color variability and breeding possibilities. There are numerous "grades" that are rated according to color intensity and pattern, which makes it particularly popular with ambitious breeders. Its more demanding keeping conditions make it more suitable for experienced aquarists, but with the right care it rewards with its beauty and elegance.
