The Pinocchio shrimp ( Caridina gracilirostris ) is a striking and interesting dwarf shrimp that is characterized by its distinctive, long, forward-facing "proboscis". This special body shape has earned it the name "Pinocchio". It is a popular species in the aquarium hobby, mainly because of its unusual appearance and peaceful nature.

Characteristics:

  • Size : The Pinocchio shrimp reaches a size of about 3 to 4 cm, although it appears somewhat slimmer than other dwarf shrimp.
  • Coloration : The basic color of this shrimp species is transparent to slightly reddish. Particularly striking are the red stripes that run along the body and the elongated "trunk" that characterizes its typical appearance. Under good conditions, the red coloration can become more intense.
  • Behavior : The Pinocchio shrimp is very active and constantly moves around the aquarium in search of food. It is peaceful and can be kept in the company of other shrimp species and small, non-aggressive fish.

Attitude:

  • Aquarium size : A tank of at least 30 liters is sufficient for a small group of Pinocchio shrimp. Since they like to swim and are active, the aquarium should offer enough space.
  • Water values : These shrimp prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH value of 6.0 to 7.5 and temperatures between 22 and 28 °C. Stable and clean water conditions are important for their well-being.
  • Food : Pinocchio shrimp eat algae, detritus and other small organic particles. They also accept special shrimp food and occasionally plant and protein-rich food.
  • Reproduction : Breeding the Pinocchio shrimp is difficult in a freshwater aquarium because its larvae require brackish water to develop. Females carry the eggs under their abdomen, but the young require special conditions to hatch and develop.

Special features:

The Pinocchio shrimp is particularly popular due to its unusual appearance and interesting behavior. Its long "trunk" gives it a unique appearance compared to other shrimp species. Since its reproduction is difficult in normal freshwater tanks, it is mostly kept as an ornamental shrimp species for planted aquariums, where it impresses with its active nature and striking coloration.
