The ogre catfish is an impressive and highly distinctive predator from South America, immediately noticeable for its broad head, large mouth, and powerful body shape. This species is known for devouring prey almost as large as itself – a spectacular behavior that makes it so popular with experienced aquarists. Despite its fearsome appearance, it is a calm, rather passive ambush predator.

Asterophysus batrachus prefers calm, dimly lit aquariums with ample hiding places and an open bottom area. Since it will eat anything that fits in its mouth, it must be kept singly or with very large, robust fish. Its hardy nature makes it easy to care for, but it is definitely suitable for experienced aquarists.
