Cyperus helferi, a species native to Thailand, is the first Cyperus plant to be successfully cultivated in aquariums. While many Cyperus species are widespread in the tropics, few are suitable as underwater plants, with Cyperus helferi being a notable exception.
The plant is characterized by its graceful, grass-like leaves, which sway elegantly in the current when the water is moving well, giving the aquarium a dynamic look. Cyperus helferi needs a relatively high amount of light to grow healthily, and additional CO₂ fertilization promotes its growth considerably. This plant is particularly suitable for aquariums that aim for a lively and natural design, as it also looks good in more sophisticated aquascapes.
