The Black Taiwan Bee Shrimp ( Caridina cantonensis ), also known as the Panda Shrimp , is a highly prized dwarf shrimp characterized by its contrasting black and white coloration. This shrimp species belongs to the Taiwan Bee shrimp and is particularly popular among shrimp breeders and aquarists looking for a rare and attractive species.
Characteristics:
- Size : The Black Taiwan Bee shrimp reaches a size of about 2.5 to 3 cm. The females are usually slightly larger and rounder than the males.
- Coloration : This shrimp is characterized by its distinctive black and white color bands. Depending on the breeding form, the black areas can be deep black and shiny, while the white areas are bright and clear.
- Behavior : Black Taiwan Bee Shrimp are peaceful and sociable. They feel most comfortable in groups and spend their time searching the substrate and plants for food. They can be kept well with other peaceful shrimp species or small fish.

- Aquarium size : A tank of at least 20 liters is enough for a small group of these shrimp. Dense vegetation, moss and hiding places offer them protection and promote their well-being.
- Water values : The Black Taiwan Bee shrimp prefers soft, slightly acidic water with a pH value of 5.5 to 6.5 and temperatures between 20 and 24 °C. These shrimp are a little more sensitive and require stable water conditions and good filtration.
- Food : Like many shrimp, the Black Taiwan Bee feeds on algae, biofilm and detritus. It can also be fed with special shrimp food as well as plant-based and protein-rich foods such as spinach or brine shrimp.
- Reproduction : Breeding the Black Taiwan Bee shrimp is possible in an aquarium, but it is challenging. The females carry their eggs for about 30 days before the fully developed young shrimp hatch. Optimal water conditions are crucial for breeding success.
Special features:
The Black Taiwan Bee shrimp is a beautiful, contrastingly colored dwarf shrimp that is a visual highlight in any aquarium. However, keeping it requires a little more experience and care, especially when it comes to water parameters. It is therefore particularly suitable for advanced aquarists who want to take on the challenge of a more demanding shrimp species.
