The Black Bee Shrimp ( Caridina logemanni ) is an attractive and popular dwarf shrimp that is characterized by its black and white pattern. Like the Red Bee Shrimp, it belongs to the bee shrimp family and is the result of selective breeding. It is particularly popular with shrimp lovers because of its elegant appearance and the wide variety of breeding variants.

Characteristics:

  • Size : Black Bee shrimp grow to about 2.5 to 3 cm in size. Females are usually slightly larger and rounder than the males.
  • Coloration : The Black Bee shrimp has a black base color, which is interrupted by snow-white bands or spots. The contrasts can vary greatly depending on the breeding line and quality. As with the Red Bee shrimp, there are different grades, which are evaluated according to the clarity and intensity of the colors.
  • Behavior : These shrimp are peaceful and can easily be kept with other shrimp species and peaceful aquarium inhabitants. They like to move in groups and can often be seen feeding or searching the substrate.

Attitude:

  • Aquarium size : An aquarium of at least 20 liters is sufficient for a small group of Black Bee shrimp. The tank should be densely planted and offer plenty of hiding places to avoid stress.
  • Water values : Black Bee shrimp prefer soft, slightly acidic water with a pH value of 5.5 to 6.5 and temperatures between 20 and 24 °C. They are somewhat more sensitive to fluctuations in water values, which is why stable water quality is essential.
  • Food : They feed on algae, detritus and special shrimp food. A varied diet supports their health and promotes strong colors.
  • Reproduction : The Black Bee shrimp can reproduce in an aquarium. After mating, the females carry the eggs for about 30 days until the tiny young shrimp hatch. Once they hatch, they are independent and do not require any special care, apart from optimal water parameters.

Special features:

The Black Bee shrimp is closely related to the Red Bee shrimp and is also one of the most sought-after breeding shrimp. Its black and white coloring and the various breeding grades make it particularly interesting for ambitious shrimp keepers and breeders. It requires a little more care than more robust shrimp species, but is rewarded with its elegant appearance and the possibility of breeding a wide variety of color variants.
