The algae shrimp ( Neocaridina davidi ), also known as the Neocaridina algae eater , is a popular dwarf shrimp that is valued for its ability to efficiently combat algae in the aquarium. This robust and easy-care shrimp species is ideal for aquarium beginners as well as experienced aquarists, as it not only helps with algae control, but also represents an aesthetic enrichment for any tank.

Characteristics:

  • Size : Females reach a size of up to 3 cm, while males remain slightly smaller.
  • Coloration : The coloration can range from translucent to various shades, as this can be a hybrid of different color variants of Neocaridina davidi . They often have a translucent or slightly colored appearance, which makes them appear inconspicuous in the aquarium.
  • Behavior : The algae shrimp is very peaceful and shows sociable behavior. It is active and constantly looking for food, especially algae and leftover food, which makes it a useful helper in the aquarium.

Attitude:

  • Aquarium size : A tank of 20 liters or more is sufficient. Densely planted aquariums with hiding places such as moss, roots and stones offer the shrimp protection and a natural environment.
  • Water values : They are very adaptable and robust, which makes them ideal for different aquarium conditions. They prefer temperatures between 18 and 28°C and a pH value of 6.5 to 8.0. Soft to medium hard water is optimal.
  • Food : Their main diet consists of algae, biofilm and detritus. Additionally, they eat special shrimp food, food scraps and dead plant parts. Their continuous grazing on algae areas helps to keep the aquarium clean and free of algae growth.
  • Reproduction : Like other Neocaridina species, the algae shrimp reproduces easily in the aquarium. Females carry their eggs under their abdomens and after about 30 days the young shrimp hatch and are independent from the start.

Special features:

The algae shrimp is particularly useful for natural algae control in the aquarium. Not only is it easy to care for, but it is also an excellent choice for aquariums with algae problems. With its peaceful and sociable nature, it can easily be kept together with other shrimp or small fish. Its ability to effectively eliminate algae makes it an indispensable helper in any aquarium, while at the same time it is a subtle but charming visual enrichment
