The African knifefish ( Xenomystus nigri ) is the best-known representative of the African knifefish family and is considered a true classic among aquarists. With its flat, knife-shaped body and its floating, undulating movement, it glides silently through the water – a fascinating spectacle that enhances any aquarium.

In its natural habitat, the tranquil rivers and swamps of West and Central Africa, Xenomystus nigri lives in densely vegetated riparian zones. There, it mostly stays in shady areas and is primarily active at dusk and at night. This species is peaceful, sensitive, and very adaptable – ideal for experienced keepers of calm community aquariums.

Xenomystus nigri prefers calm aquariums with dim lighting, dense planting, and fine substrate. Peaceful tank mates of similar size are ideal. Stress from more active species should be strictly avoided.
