The Crystal Red Shrimp ( Caridina logemanni ), also known as CRS (Crystal Red Shrimp), is one of the best known and most sought-after dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby. It impresses with its contrasting red and white pattern and is one of the breeding variants of the bee shrimp. Due to its striking coloring and various quality levels, it is particularly popular with breeders.
Characteristics:
- Size : The Crystal Red shrimp reaches a size of about 2.5 to 3 cm. Females are usually larger and rounder than males.
- Coloration : Crystal Red shrimps have a red and white pattern, although the color distribution and intensity can vary greatly. There are different breeding grades (e.g. SS, SSS), where shrimps with clearly defined, intense colors are valued higher. The white areas should be as snow-white as possible and the red areas should be brightly colored.
- Behavior : These shrimp are peaceful, social and sociable. They can be kept in groups and with other peaceful shrimp or fish. They are constantly looking for food and combing the substrate for algae and detritus.
Attitude:
- Aquarium size : An aquarium of at least 20 to 30 liters is ideal for a small group. Dense planting, moss and hiding places such as roots and stones are beneficial for the shrimp, as they provide a place to retreat and feel comfortable.
- Water values : Crystal Red shrimp are somewhat sensitive and prefer soft, slightly acidic water with a pH value of 5.5 to 6.5 and temperatures between 20 and 24 °C. They are particularly sensitive to fluctuations in water values, which is why stable conditions and good water quality are important.
- Food : They feed on algae, biofilm and special shrimp food. A varied diet that also contains plant-based and protein-rich ingredients promotes their health and supports strong colors.
- Reproduction : The Crystal Red shrimp reproduces relatively well in a freshwater aquarium. Females carry their eggs under their abdomen for about 30 days until the fully developed young shrimp hatch. These are independent immediately after hatching.
Special features:
The Crystal Red shrimp is particularly popular with breeders because it offers different breeding grades that are evaluated according to color intensity and pattern. It is suitable for both experienced aquarists and ambitious breeders. Its relatively demanding keeping conditions make it a little more care-intensive, but its beauty and variety in breeding forms make it a worthwhile species for shrimp keeping.
